September 13, 2012 - We had an excellent discussion this past Monday regarding social media, resumes, and tips to change careers. Please join us next month when we have our 2nd annual - Jobs for Geeks. Recruiters and other business professionals will be on hand to talk about local openings, even more tips on resumes and cover letters, and we'll have opportunities to network and discuss best methods for job searches and applications.
Please RSVP through http://a2flashfocused.eventbrite.com
August 15, 2012 - Misty and I planned our upcoming presentations. Hopefully, knowing the topics further in advance will help you determine which meetings will best serve you!
Are you looking for a new job or just curious about what's out there? Come in October to partake of our Job Fair! We plan to make this an annual event. We will have multiple recruiters available to share open positions, talk about what they look for in an applicant, and offer numerous job search tips.
Planned events and topics are available on the Meetings page. We look forward to seeing you!
July 20, 2012 - Apologies for delays in updating - crazy busy summer! Our next meeting will be held on August 13th, same bat time, same bat channel.
Congratulations to Mike who won a copy of CS6!
Remember, attendance at meetings means raffle entries! Twice a year, we'll draw a name for Adobe software, other months you could win training modules, other software or prizes. As always, you can't win if you don't come to a meeting! And...if you bring someone new, you get 2 entries!
Finally, we plan to offer another career fair. Let us know what types of jobs you'd be interested in and we'll make sure we have a representative from that field.
June 6, 2012 - Happy Running Day!
Our monthly meeting is this upcoming Monday and I have two words for you - Software Raffle!
Be there to get one last entry in for the drawing!
May 15, 2012 - We learned some new things last night, thank you for coming! You don't want to miss June's meeting as we'll be raffling off some software and training. A topic is yet to be determined, but we'll let you know what we'll be covering as soon as possible.
Until then, be sure to check out some of the CS6 videos available through our Meeting Archives page. Any presentation materials will always be available on this site.
May 8, 2012 - CS6 is coming! As most of you know by now, Adobe CS6 will be available for purchase soon. During this month's meeting, we'll cover some of the new features and hear the information presented by those in the know. Misty will be unable to attend, but I'll be there showing some video and ready to discuss what I know. There will be some great giveaways (training, anyone?). Remember, for every meeting you attend, you get an entry for a software raffle from Adobe...one of the easiest ways to upgrade!
March 13, 2012 - Thank you to all who came out last night and welcome new members! Misty has provided us with the information from her talk last night. As always, let us know of any topics you would like us to cover. If you're interested in particular areas, we're always open to seeing what information we can find.
March 9, 2012 - We ARE meeting on Monday. WOO!
The focus of the meeting will be around Social Media and Marketing - whether for your business or yourself. Pretty much everyone we know is participating in social media. However, are we doing the most we could to promote ourselves or our business?
February 2, 2012 - Due to work circumstances out of our control, we will need to cancel the February user group meeting. I know you were all really excited about this one!
We WILL have March's meeting - same bat time, same bat channel. As always, let us know if there's something in particular you want us to cover in the upcoming year - this includes Microsoft items (like SharePoint).
Also - if there's a book you have read recently pertaining to IT, general geekery, or other things we typically cover in our meetings. Feel free to submit a review to me. I have a page set up on the site for us to review the various books we receive from Peachpit and O'Reilly.
January 5, 2012 - Happy New Year! Our first meeting of 2012 will be on Monday, January 9th. Misty and I apologize for the dwindling meetings we had at the end of 2011. Conflicts arose for both of us each month and we were unable to hold the meeting.
Fortunately for the group, it means we have a lot of giveaways for our first meeting! One thing we would like to touch upon this time around is our group - the vision we have for it and the goals we hope to achieve. We both feel the group can make great strides in the upcoming year, but we really need all of your help! Any ideas are welcome for how to promote/market the group to others within the community. We'll be looking for ways to better network and collaborate with other technology related groups in Ann Arbor and Southeast Michigan - if there's a group you're a member of, let us know!
November 10, 2011 - First and foremost, we will NOT be meeting this month. See you at December's party!
Second, you may have heard about Adobe's recent decision to stop development on Flash Player and focus their efforts on HTML5. I have put together a FAQ and blog postings by Adobe staff. Let Misty or Angie know if you have any questions.
November 1, 2011 - Thank you to everyone who made it out for the October meeting! Due to conflicts, we need to cancel the November meeting. Keep your eyes peeled for more info about the meeting in December!
September 26, 2011 - ATTENTION! We're getting ready to have one of the BEST meetings ever. On October 10, we're hosting a Jobs for Geeks talk. What does that mean?
If you are looking for a job or possibly just a NEW job, you'll want to come to our meeting. We're having a mini job-fair of sorts where there will be a few recruiters coming out to tell everyone what jobs they are looking to fill *AND* telling us what recruiters look for in a resume and interview. GREAT info for any job seeker OR student so please invite anyone that you know who could benefit.
ALSO!!!!! We're giving away some great prizes, including a copy of Adobe CS5 and a couple training certificates for Webucator and MORE! So please RSVP if you plan to attend and invite anyone who might benefit from the info or the giveaways!
August 8, 2011 - Obviously, I'm not doing a very good job of keeping this updated. Sorry!
We'll be meeting tonight in our usual location - Ann Arbor SPARK on E. Liberty. Misty will be covering Typography and its uses in print and web design. We look forward to seeing you there! Please let us know if you plan to attend, so we can plan accordingly for foodstuffs.

May 11, 2011 - Sorry for the lack of updates lately. A lot going on with both Misty and I and this site fell by the wayside. If you're ever wondering if something's going on, just shoot us an email.
Our next meeting will be on June 13th. There will be a lot of good giveaways - copy of CS5, Class tuition for Webucator, Pluralsight one month education, T-shirts, and more.
February 9, 2011 - We have heard from a few people that you're very interested in having a discussion about digital publishing, but can't make the February meeting because it falls on Valentine's Day. (And here Angie and I thought that FlashFocused was tops in everyone hearts!)
So we've decided that we'll do the topic at our March meeting and not meet for February after all.
We hope you guys all have a fun, safe and very happy valentine's day and we'll see you in March!

August 3, 2010 - We'll be meeting this upcoming Monday, August 9th, starting at 6:15p.m. As usual, we'll have food and beverages available. Since it's the summer and a lot of people are out of town, we'll have a shortened meeting this month. We plan on wrapping up around 7:45p, which will give everyone some time to enjoy the rest of their day!
Let us know if you'd be interested in a networking style meeting, either one where you show your own work and get suggestions or we try and have some local companies, who hire people with our skills, come in and elaborate on what they look for in their employees. Misty and I are trying to come up with ideas on how to grow our group, so any suggestions are welcomed!
July 7, 2010 - Our monthly meeting is happening in less than one week! It's almost time for Art Fair and our summer's definitely here, and going by fast.
If there are any topics of interest you would like to see a presenation for, let us know!
June 15, 2010 - Thank you to Emilio for an interesting presentation on Photoshop Actions. You can find pre-made actionsets on our Yahoo! Groups pages.
May 11, 2010 - We'd like to thank all those who were able to come to the meeting last night. Congratulations go to our presenter, who won the CS5 raffle! Great job, Tafari, on winning and the presentation! Join us in June, when Emilio will present on Photoshop. As always, if there's a topic you are intersted in, let us know! We're always looking for presenters in areas of your interests.
For those of you who are interested in Photoshop for Photographers, Ben Willmore will be in Livonia on May 24th. More information can be found on his site - http://www.digitalmastery.com/content/view/309/41/
Let us know if you plan on attending, we have some interested parties that would like to carpool!
May 10, 2010 - Please join us on Monday, May 10th as Tafari Stevenson-Howard presents on Adobe Lightroom. Tafari is a Michigan based photographer with deep creative roots and a vision for the future. As a natural artist, photography became an easily integrated component of his graphic arts background. He has been a photographer since 2001, recently sharing his art and creativity professionally with those seeking a photographer who is forward thinking. Commercial, still-life, naturals, portraiture and event photography are his specialties.
We are also pleased to have a special guest, Kelley Gottschang, in attendance. Kelley is a full time faculty member of the Internet Professional department at Washtenaw Community College. She is redeveloping the curriculum for WCC's Flash classes and would love to get some input from our group.
As a bonus to all, we will be raffling off a copy of CS5!
April 7, 2010 - Join us Monday, April 12th, as we celebrate the release of Adobe CreativeSuite 5! April 12th is the official launch date and we're going to have a celebration. Join us for the party!
March 4, 2010 - Our next meeting is fast approaching! We'll once again be meeting at Ann Arbor SPARK, on E. Liberty by the Liberty Plaza.
February 9, 2010 - Thank you to all who showed up last evening for our first meeting in a new location. We asked the group about topics they would be interested in hearing about in the future. Some that came up were Lightroom, Photoshop, how other programs 'play' with Adobe products, Captivate, and Flash. Let us know if there is a topic of interest you'd like to hear more information about. Also, if there is a project you're working on and you're running into trouble, send an email to the Yahoo! group. We did a little collaborating last night to assist a new member.
Additionally, if there are books that Peachpit or O'Reilly presses carry, and you'd like to get your hands on them, let Angie know. She can get those for us as long as we agree to do a little book review, nothing too crazy, but the publishers would like to know how helpful the books they're putting out are. The next meeting will be on March 8th, same place and time. Hope you can make it!
February 5, 2010 - Reminder, our meeting will be held at SPARK Central on Monday, 2/8, starting at approximately 6:00 p.m. There will probably be street parking nearby. Other options include the Maynard Structure by Borders or the Thompson Street structure West of the Michigan Union. The Thompson structure is blue permit only until 6:00 p.m., so if you're running late and don't mind a bit of a walk, that's a good option. Likewise, unless the city changed things, street parking becomes free at 6:00 p.m.
Food will be available. We have lots of giveaways, too.
January 20, 2010 - I am happy to announce that we have found new meeting space!!
Ann Arbor SPARK is allowing us the use of their main conference room in their Central Business Incubator in Ann Arbor at 330 E. Liberty St. This is under the Center for the Education of Women (CEW) at the pseudo corner of Division and Liberty, kitty corner from Bar Louie, across the street from the old Kaplan testing building and the furniture store.
Metered street parking is free starting at 6:00 p.m. weekdays, so you can snag yourself a spot on the street or park in the Maynard Street structure near Borders. UM blue permit parking also ceases to be enforced at 6:00 p.m., so you could park sort of nearby in the Thompson Street structure down by West Quad. (Central campus map)
Our meeting date will be changing to the 2nd Tuesday of each month. I have added future dates to our calendar.
Thank you, everyone, for your patience while we coordinated everything. We're hoping the move to Ann Arbor will help us increase student turnout and, potentially, also attract more locals to our group. Email Misty or Angie with any questions.
January 4, 2010 - Happy New Year!
We are in the process of securing a meeting location for this month, most likely toward the last week or so. Finding space to meet has never been so difficult!
Misty and I are really looking forward to getting 2010 started off well. We have tons of giveaways (books, shirts, pens, software, etc.) that we'll dole out to attendees. I have several books that publishers would like to have reviewed. We have space available to post these on our site, just don't have anything written yet to post! The more reviews we're able to do (posted to sites like O'Reilly, Amazon, and here), the more books we'll be able to review. As always, if there's a book out there that you've been interested in checking out, and you're willing to write up a couple paragraphs or so about it, let Angie know. We can get those books from the publisher for you to look over (for free!).
December 8, 2009 - We are still working to secure a meeting space for the December meeting. We're hoping that we'll be able to have something finalized soon for 2010. Right now, we have a ton of giveaways, just need a venue to be able to pass those along to the rest of you!
November 2, 2009 - UPDATE - Until we can find meeting space, we don't have a venue to have our meetings in each month. If any of you know of locations we could hold meetings in, let us know! Email Misty or Angie
The next meeting we have will be full of goodies! Angie's been busy getting cool swag from various vendors and books for review/use. Remember, if there's a particular subject you're interested in a book on, let Angie know. We can get books from suppliers, if we promise to write a review and put it on our site and on a site such as Amazon. This is a FANTASTIC deal for us!
September 29, 2009 - First, we'd like to apologize for the confusion. We're still looking to secure meeting space for this upcoming school year and are having some slight glitches in finding something suitable. (If you have ideas, let us know.) Once we have that all ironed out, we'll let you know where we're meeting, when we're meeting, and what we're going to cover. Until then, please bear with us.
I still have books available that need to be reviewed for the various publishers. Each month, I can pick a new book with the stipulation we post a review on the site and on another site such as Amazon. If you're willing to review something, let me know.
Be sure to check out the events page for other local meetings. There's a lot of new stuff happening in the area. For example:

March 24, 2009 - Due to some scheduling conflicts in our personal schedules, we're combining this month's meeting with the Refresh Detroit meeting tomorrow (3/25) evening. Here are the details...
March Meeting: Noel Jackson - Transitioning from Print to Web Design
Join us on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 when Noel Jackson of Automattic, Inc. (known for their WordPress and Akismet projects) will discuss the differences between print and web design.
What separates print and web in the design community? What do designers need to know to bridge the gap between print and the web? What constraints do web designers need to understand?
We’re thrilled that Noel will be presenting our first “design-focused” topic at Refresh Detroit!
Noel will discuss:
Noel Jackson is an übergeek, designer, and developer. Pulled from the depths of freelance design, he now works for Automattic, Inc. He loves the internet and dreams in HTML quite frequently. A self-proclaimed polymath, Noel was once a secret agent, fashion photographer, and ran a successful post-production studio in NYC.
When not pushing pixels and babbling about regexes, he’s probably listening to music (300 LPs and 250 gigs in all), DJing, or creating something (generative art is a favorite as of late). He lives in Detroit with his beautiful wife Stephanie, a fish named Hiro, and a chinchilla named Elvis.
When: Wednesday, March 25, 2009, 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Cost: Free! Open to the public.
RSVP at Upcoming.org

Making the web usable for all visitors is the primary goal of creating an accessible website. The W3C estimates that close to 20% of all website visitors have some form of disability, whether cognitive, visual, hearing, or physical. These disabilities affect how visitors access a website, whether on a computer with assistive technology, laptop, or cell phone. Learn what website accessibility is, why it is important, and what you as a web professional can do to provide a more accessible website for all website visitors. See how a screen reader views a web page and discover the different methods for testing website accessibility.
Mary Donnelly is a senior user experience consultant with Evantage Consulting. Her extensive experience includes user needs analysis, low and high fidelity prototyping, usability testing, research study design, and heuristic evaluation and assessment. At the March 2008 EKU Web Accessibility Conference, Mary presented “An accessibility study of an online resource directory geared towards people with disabilities and seniors.” Mary is an HFI Certified Usability Analyst, a member of the Usability Professionals’ Association, and the Society of Technical Communication.
Cathy McAdam, ACSW, has 20 years experience in rehabilitation medicine as a medical social worker at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan. In 1999, Cathy started her own company as a consultant focused on advocacy for assistive technology, and provision of career development
services. She runs a tutor program for libraries for basic computer skills for Greater Detroit Agency For The Blind and Visually Impaired. She leads grants focused on assistive technology for people with disabilities to drive systemic change that will permanently improve access to assistive technology devices and services.

August 22, 2008 - Hello everyone!
As we have many things happening in September and it is the week before a holiday, we are going to forgo the August meeting. However, there are a few things I would like to make sure everyone everyone knows about:
August 6, 2008 - Lisa had the following to say on her blog:
"I had the pleasure of presenting last week to the FlashFocused user group in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was a lucky coincidence that my family summertime visit happened to be on the week of their monthly meeting. Yay syncronicity!
I gave them the lowdown on Flash video, of course — a topic that happened to be quite relevant for many of the members who attended. For those of you who have been waiting patiently for me to post the code examples and presentation notes, here they are!
–> Presentation [PDF] <–
–> Source files [ZIP] <–
Thanks for your patience, and for having me present to your group. And thanks to Misty for grabbing a copy of my book for a giveaway, as well! You guys rock."
July 31, 2008 - Many thanks to Lisa Larson-Kelley for speaking to our group this month! Lisa covered how to easily put Flash videos into websites and many different ways to do so. You can follow Lisa at her blog at flashconnections.com or watch her on AdobeTV when they release Flash 411.
Register now for the Adobe MAX Conference coming this November in San Francisco, CA. More information can be found at the Adobe Event site:

What's so special about this one? Well, you've probably heard that
Adobe has announced the release of Adobe Flex 3 and Adobe AIR 1.0.
Now that the cat is out of the bag, this will be the focus of our
Monday special meeting!
Flex 3 is a feature-packed release, adding new UI components like the advanced datagrid and improved CSS capabilities; powerful tooling additions like refactoring; and extensive testing tools including memory and performance profiling, plus the addition of the automated testing framework to Flex Builder.
Adobe AIR is game-changing in so many ways, delivering rich applications on the desktop, enabling access to the local file system, system tray, notifications and much more. Now you can write RIAs on the desktop using the same skills that you've been already using to create great web apps including both Flex and AJAX.
Don't miss out on this opportunity to see and hear about this highly anticipated release of Flex 3 and AIR at this meeting, PLUS! We'll have Adobe swag to give away!

This is a very cool video produced by Macromedia. A behind the scenes look at the development team and some of the processes just before the release of Flash 8.
July 27 - Thanks to all who came out to last night's meeting, it was a lot of fun! To recap - the plan was to install Suse 9.1, Apache, MySQL and BlueDragon Server on to a machine and then raffle it off. Well - we accomplished the first of those tasks. =)
We did successfully install Suse 9.1 and then ran into an error when trying to compile Apache. I've since found this post that will help anyone wanting to continue the experiment at home.
Basically - just grab the rpm file of GCC and install it using Yast. You can grab the rpm here:
